Providing innovative education for lifelong success
Gloria Marigny CNA School, located in Inglewood, California, provides a rigorous training program for individuals aspiring to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). This school not only focuses on equipping students with the necessary clinical and interpersonal skills through a blend of classroom instruction and practical training but also enhances career opportunities through its strategic partnership with WAYS Home Care & Health Agency. This collaboration ensures that graduates have the possibility of immediate employment, facilitating a smooth transition from education to practical application in a professional healthcare setting. By preparing students for the state certification exam and offering a direct pathway to employment, Gloria Marigny CNA School stands out as a pivotal institution for those looking to enter the healthcare field.
Gloria Marigny was a pioneering and influential figure in the labor union movement, particularly within Local 399 in Los Angeles, where she served as Secretary-Treasurer and a member of the International Board. I had the privilege of meeting her in February 1981 when I was assigned to work at Local 399. Her mentoring was instrumental in shaping my approach to union work, teaching me the importance of personal connection and trust-building among union members.
Gloria's expertise was not limited to her administrative roles; she was also a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), which gave her a profound insight into the healthcare sector. This background allowed her to advocate effectively for CNAs and other healthcare workers, ensuring their concerns and needs were addressed in union negotiations. Her strategy often involved a clever mix of humor to diffuse tensions and tough negotiation tactics, earning her a reputation as a formidable and unrelenting advocate.
Her work extended beyond just organizing and advocating; she was a master at conducting walk-throughs at Kaiser Sunset, covering extensive ground and making every union member feel valued and heard. She also had a knack for engaging nursing home workers at bus stops during shift changes, building robust lists for organization and mobilization.
Gloria Marigny's legacy as a trailblazer is also marked by her status as the first African American woman officer of her local union and a member of the International Executive Board.
